My name is Ishmael and my birthday is October 31, 2013. I live in Vea, Ghana with my family. Mathematics is my favorite class in school. My favorite animal is a sheep. I love playing soccer with my friends and I like climbing trees.

The Context
Ishmael’s world.
Ishmael lives in Vea, a farming village in Ghana’s Upper East Region — one of the poorest areas in West Africa. He attends school here, walking along unpaved roads through the savanna each morning.
In Vea, families depend on a single rainy season — just three months — to grow an entire year’s food. Only 9% of people in the district live within walking distance of clean water. The groundwater itself is contaminated with fluoride levels above WHO safety limits.
