My name is Erica, I live in the village of Vea, Ghana, where I attend school.
“Erica lives with her Mom and 5 siblings. She lost her Dad when she was 8 years old. Erica is determined to become a nurse in the future to help the poor and needy in health care in her community.”
The Context
Erica’s world.
Erica lives in Vea, a farming village in Ghana’s Upper East Region — one of the poorest areas in West Africa. She attends school here, walking along unpaved roads through the savanna each morning.
In Vea, families depend on a single rainy season — just three months — to grow an entire year’s food. Only 9% of people in the district live within walking distance of clean water. The groundwater itself is contaminated with fluoride levels above WHO safety limits.
